Heineken recently discovered a very good use for empty beer bottles.

 

Upcycling is a 21st century term, coined by Cradle to Cradle authors William McDonough and Michael Braungart, but the idea of turning waste into useful products came to life brilliantly in 1963 with the Heineken WOBO (world bottle). Envisioned by beer brewer Alfred Heineken and designed by Dutch architect John Habraken, the “brick that holds beer” was ahead of its ecodesign time, letting beer lovers and builders alike drink and design all in one sitting.

Mr. Heineken’s idea came after a visit to the Caribbean where he saw two problems: beaches littered with bottles and a lack of affordable building materials. The WOBO became his vision to solve both the recycling and housing challenges that he had witnessed on the islands.

The final WOBO design came in two sizes – 350 and 500 mm versions that were meant to lay horizontally, interlock and layout in the same manner as ‘brick and mortar’ construction. One production run in 1963 yielded 100,000 bottles some of which were used to build a small shed on Mr. Heineken’s estate in Noordwijk, Netherlands. One of the construction challenges “was to find a way in which corners and openings could be made without cutting bottles,” said Mr. Habraken.

Despite the success of the first “world bottle” project, the Heineken brewery didn’t support the WOBO and the idea stalled. Interest was reignited in 1975 when Martin Pawley published Garbage Housing which included the chapter ‘WOBO: a new kind of message in a bottle.’ Heineken once again approached Habraken who teamed up with designer Rinus van den Berg and designed a building with oil drums for columns, Volkswagen bus tops for roof and the WOBO bottles for walls, but the structure was never built.

 

Today, the shed at the Heineken estate and a wall made of WOBO at the Heineken Museum in Amsterdam are the only structures where the ‘beer brick’ was used. As to the remaining WOBO’s it’s not clear how many exist, or where, but the idea, even some four decades later, remains a lasting example in end-use innovation.

Let’s cut to the chase – you don’t have a bottle opener on hand, period! Now, your beer is getting warm, what are you going to do? Stress not mates for here are our top 10 ways to help you open your beer without your bottle opener.

1. With Another Beer Bottle

Materials Needed:
2 Beer Bottles
Steps:
a. Put one bottle cap underneath the other one. Take Note: Make sure you are not putting the bottle cap under the glass of rim, the glass could break.
b. Once the bottle is secure underneath the cap, hold on with one hand.
c. Take the front bottle, and then slam it hard on a hard surface. It will immediately stop, the back bottle won’t. The energy is going to force the cap right up, opening up the bottle of beer.

2. With a Toothbrush

Materials Needed:

3. With a Lighter

Materials Needed:
A smoker with a lighter
A Beer Bottle
Steps:
a. Hold the neck of the bottle with your left hand, with your pointer and thumb wrapped around the cap.
b. Position the bottom of the lighter under the cap.
c. Squeeze tightly your left hand to create pressure around the cap, in one swift motion, grab the top of the lighter with your right hand and push the lighter down like a lever.
d. The cap pops right off.
Note: Make sure to direct the bottle away from your face to avoid accidents.

4. With Your Forearm

All you need in this method is your forearm and a bottle of beer. Plant the bottle on your forearm, press it really hard then twist. Cap pops right off.

5. With A Piece of Paper

Materials Needed:
A piece of paper
A bottle of beer
Steps:
a. Fold the paper into half until you can no longer fold it.
b. Once you reach that point, it can probably open up your beer.
c. Hold your beer tightly. Place the hard edge of the paper underneath of the cap. Holding it in place with your thumb.
d. If you’re strong enough, you can push the folded paper straight up. If you’re not, just pop it up.
Note: Make sure to direct the bottle away from your face to avoid accidents.

6. With Your Teeth (Make sure it’s not false teeth, or else!)

Just make sure you have a strong set of teeth. You can chip a tooth.

Hook the bottle cap on your bottom teeth, your top teeth will be the fulcrum. Basically, you’re just biting the cap. Apply pressure to the top. The bottle will be the lever and the pulling action. Cap is going to come off. Teeth intact!

7. Spatula

Another technique of opening up a beer bottle is by using a cooking utensil, a spatula. It’s easy but you need to practice a lot first before you can master it. You might not only take the cap off but also the glass rim. That will be very dangerous.

8. With Tits

Obviously, all you need in this technique are tits and a bottle of beer. There is actually no clear or step by step instruction on this one but it sure is pretty amazing. Watch the video, you’ll see why.

9. With a Ring

Who would’ve thought that you can actually use your wedding ring (or any kind of ring and use it as a bottle opener)? This technique is just one of the many advantages of being married, trust me!
Materials Needed:
A Wedding Ring
A Bottle of Beer
Steps:
a. Take your hand where your ring is placed.
b. Hold your bottle tight on your other hand.
c. Make sure the edge of the ring fits perfectly right underneath the cap. Make sure you’re not placing your ring right under the glass rim.
d. Grip the bottle tight. Your ring finger will act as the fulcrum, your arm will be the lever.
e. Then pull the cap right off.

10. Using Your Countertop

Materials Needed:
Countertop or any flat surface (should be corner-edged not the rounded one)
A Bottle of Beer
Steps:
Hold your beer. Take the corner edge of your countertop and shove it underneath the cap. Once you have the cap on the edge, take your hand, smack the cap. The countertop will hold the cap in place, while your smack will knock the bottle down, separating the two.
